Why Real Estate Agents Aren’t Growing On Instagram 2022

If you’re a Real Estate Agent and “ONLY have 300 followers on Instagram, with most being family and friends” and are wondering “How to grow on Instagram?” this is a 5-minute blog for you.

Reframe Your Social Media Mindspace and Attitude

It is important to reframe your internal narrative from the above to “Wow! I have 300 followers and supporters on Instagram. How can I convert them into Customers? Buyers, sellers, referrals, etc.?”

Ask yourself, “How can I show up on this platform and offer my followers content that they’d find VALUABLE [insert your frequency metric here (ex. Every day, every other day, once a week, Monday to Friday, etc.)].

Remind yourself, “Social Media is about getting social!” Consider including an engagement schedule with every post. For example, try replying and leaving thoughtful comments on eye-catching posts for 10-15 minutes before and after you post or at least 30 minutes a day. People scrolling through comments are prospects too!

And finally, don’t forget about the structure of a quality carousel or Instagram Reel post.

  • Hook - The first two seconds to grab someone’s attention

  • Problem - What problem is your audience facing

  • Solution - Shine your knowledge, expertise, and personality here

  • Call to Action - Be clear about how you want your audience to engage with your content

Create Valuable Discoverable and Engaging Content

The “issue” with Instagram is that your content is for the most part only getting pushed or promoted to your followers. Unless you’re paying to boost your post or are actively “feeding the algorithm,” the likelihood of your content getting discovered organically is minuscule.

The Instagram algorithm constantly analyzes every piece of content posted to the network. It takes into account everything from how [often] people interact with your content (ex. Likes, shares, saves, comments, follows), to the metadata and hashtags included, and distributes it to other relevant accounts [likely interested in your content] via Instagram’s Explore tab, Reels tab, and at the top of newsfeeds etc.

So, if you’re not getting likes, shares, saves, comments, and follows with your posts, reconsider your content pillars

A Two-Step Winning Recipe:

  1. Lean into Instagram Reels. The head of Instagram said so himself: they’re favouring Reels and Original Content. It is the best format to grow your following, serve, and entertain.

  2. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) your Bio, captions, location tags, hashtags, and alt text. Educate the algorithm on what your content is about by using keywords to help rank your content.

Whether we like it or not, social media marketing for brokers and realtors is about sales conversion by building brand awareness and connecting with your target customers. Since social media is saturated with content [and other real estate agents vying for new business and eyes on these platforms], it is more important than ever to post consistently, engage and connect with your audience, and create valuable quality content, to see effective results.

If you want 10,000 followers, you need to start posting as though you HAVE 10,000 followers. With a big following, comes big responsibility. Some food for thought.
